Handwoven Zimbabwean Gourd Basket | Large Ilala Palm Floor Vessel

A large sculptural gourd vessel, handwoven in Zimbabwe’s Zambezi River region by skilled Tonga artisans using traditional coiling techniques passed down through generations. No dyes, no machinery, just natural ilala palm and many hours of patient handwork.

The rounded, bulbous body tapers to a narrow neck in the classic gourd silhouette, its surface marked by soft tonal banding and the gentle ribbing of the coil weave. Woven entirely in undyed palm, it carries all the warmth and quiet irregularity of something made by hand.

Standing around 50cm tall, this is a true statement piece. Leave it empty and let it stand as sculpture, or fill it with dried pampas, grasses, or tall stems for a striking organic centrepiece. It works beautifully on the floor beside a sofa or fireplace, on a sideboard, or in a hallway where it can be seen in the round.
